This upcoming paper will examine the role of faith leaders—imams, pastors, rabbis, and others—as informal first responders to mental health needs within their communities. Drawing on interviews, focus groups, and case studies, the research will analyze the ways clergy understand, support, and refer individuals experiencing psychological distress. We will also explore the training gaps and resource needs they face. The paper aims to inform frameworks for equipping clergy with practical, culturally relevant mental health tools, recognizing their unique position of trust and accessibility.
